We are so excited to have a new litter of piglets on the farm! Jewel had been keeping me waiting and wondering when they would arrive. Matthew had said they would be born June 18. Lo and behold we go out on the 18th and we were greeted with piglets. I am having way too much fun spending time with them, watching them run around and explore. They are just so cute. All 12 are doing good. I have 2 runts that I had been worried about, but so far they are holding their own. I love all the colors in this litter. They should be weaned and ready for new homes middle of August.
I will be attempting to check in and give an update on what's happening on the farm with the blog.
Right now we are in the full swing of spring! Lots of project going on and babies here to love, lambs, chicks and hopefully soon more piglets. My latest adventure in learning something new is shearing sheep. With our Katahdins they are haired sheep so they will shed their wool. But bringing in the Florida Crackers means I get to learn how to shear. I sure hope that the more I practice the better I will get. Poor things...at least it grows out quickly. I am hoping over winter to be able to play with some of the fiber and learn how to clean, and card the wool. If I have some time maybe even learn how to spin it.
So far in the garden the potatoes are growing really well. I have lots of radishes, kale, tomatoes, peppers, squash, corn, melons, and cucumbers planted that will hopefully grow. We have been working on getting our orchard started. The hard part about this would be the patience required. It will be at least 3 or 4 years before we will be able to start getting fruit from the trees.
